Back and open for business!

Top deck of the cruise ship
My view for the past couple weeks…

Yes! We’re open and ready to serve up some rice!

Should you find yourself walking along Schützenstrasse, you’ll notice that a little rice lunch shop is humming along today. That’s because I am back from a super relaxing cruise holiday.

In case you need reminding, our restaurant hours are:

weekdays … 11.30 – 13.30

This week, Jesus RICE is open Wednesday through Friday. And next week, we revert to our usual Monday through Friday rhythm. See? Easy as rice!

Rice to see you again!

Yes! We are open… M-F ¦ 11.30 – 13.30

Beginning in June 2019, our hours of operation will be:

M – F  ¦  11.30 – 13.30

Basically, no dinner service.

One of the best things about running your own business is getting to experiment and make changes — in real time, and as it best suits the business. So, now, Jesus RICE! is open for lunch only again

Yuck! Horrible! Cooking Show Fail…

Chef Luna Horrible

A few months ago, I received a call to cater an event for a large group of people in Winterthur. My goal: to create the most horrible-tasting experience for them imaginable. My first step was to go through my shelves and refrigerators and dig up all the oldest, worst-tasting ingredients I could get my hands on.

JUST KIDDING!

Have you ever noticed how the television cooking shows always have the chef tasting his own food and going, “Mmmm! Delicious!” with a dreamy expression? We thought we’d have a laugh and shoot the opposite. If I hadn’t been so sleep-deprived, I might have found this less funny…

April Fool’s Day!

So, about the Horrible! exclamation in the video…

I was preparing Tabbouleh, made with a lot of fresh parsley and mint, quinoa, tomatoes, fresh lemon, some olive oil and salt. This was but one of five dishes I was preparing for about 40 people, and I had been on a roll, but getting a little silly. These parties have a lot of moving parts.

Because I’m committed to freshness, and quality ingredients, most of the preparation gets pushed to the last day or two before the event. It’s like being back in college getting ready for a big exam. There can be sleepless nights with a few 20-minute power naps leading up to the moment when people start arriving. And there can be bouts of delirious silliness.

Hope you had a laugh with us.

Have you seen my cookbook?

I have a little cookbook out and ready for download. It’s called 5 Easy Chef Luna Recipes. You can access it by clicking here, or on the image furthr below.

In it, I share the following five easy recipes:Cover Image of 5 Easy Chef Luna Recipes

  • A delicious Cabbage Saladrecipe, one of my most popular dishes back in the United States
  • Asian-style Green Beans, which is a healthy alternative to the french fry
  • Gambas al ajillo, one of my favorite easy-as-hell, show-stopping dishes
  • A dependable Tomato Sauce recipe, which serves as an important flavor basis for any dish, including spaghetti, of course. (This tomato sauce is THE secret ingredient to the Bacon Lovers’ Erlebnis speck-tacularness!)
  • Banana Brot, an easy recipe that delivers again and again

One of the things I love about this little booklet is that each recipe has a hyperlink that sends you directly to a YouTube video. So, you have all the ingredients and a brief description on one page, but you can see the recipe in action! Just click on the link in the image below!

Jesus RICE! Menu as of 1 Mar 2019

The menu at Jesus RICE! as of March 2019

The menus photographed above are largely what you can expect to get for lunch at Jesus RICE! One exception: no pumpkin. The vegan menu is still available, but pumpkin is not part of the dish. As I work with what nature supplies, I’ll let customers know on a day-to-day basis.

As usual, all dishes are served with white rice and white beans.

And, yes, those are my prices… ENJOY!

Seeing is believing! (A little bit of Jesus RICE food porn)

There are a few updates to the Jesus RICE! business in the pipeline. (Hint: stay tuned to learn about our dinner times. Also, if you ever dreamed of takeaway, come back to this website to learn more!) To prepare for those updates, we got fancy with photography. Now, you can see the menu!

New Bacon Lovers’ menu item tastes like my favorite pizza!

Bacon Lovers Erlebnis! at Chef Luna's Jesus RICE!

A few weeks ago, Jesus RICE! added the Bacon Lovers’ Erlebnis to the menu. Even though I haven’t gotten around to adding it to my menu boards, it has made it to my paper order slips — and it looks like customers love it! I certainly do.

It’s perfect for this time of year. Good, bacon tastiness, supported by a smooth tomato sauce and a hint of caramelized onions.

I was wondering why I loved this dish so much, and then it hit me! It tastes like my favorite pizza, Lo Speck — only, instead of dough, it’s served with rice (my alltime favorite starch!).

The Best Pizza in Winterthur?

My customers often ask me where I go to out to eat. Honestly, there are only a handful of places I go to. Pizzeria Cardinal is one of them. Whenever I go there I order Lo Speck. I probably love it so much because it tastes like my bacon lovers’ menu item at Jesus RICE!

Check out my video (under five minutes) to see why I think the best pizza in Winterthur is at Pizzeria Cardinal!

(This blog post is my honest opinion. I have not received any compensation or payment to make the video or write this blog post.)

If you find yourself in Winterthur, and you’re looking for a great place to have pizza and an Italian dinner, you won’t regret coming to his family-owned business. It’s well worth your evening in this small town.

Chef Luna to download 5 easy chef luna recipes book

Now on the menu: every bacon lover’s dream!

Bacon Lovers Erlebnis! at Chef Luna's Jesus RICE!

Last week’s snowfall presented the perfect opportunity for me to try out a new menu item. The result: a Bacon Lovers’ Erlebnis — that’s German for Experience — that brings together the best of all worlds! Hearty flavor, that spoons perfectly with rice and white beans.

One of the Bacon Lovers in my life is totally into this!

So, what’s in the Bacon Lovers’ Erlebnis? It basically looks like the picture above, but it tastes like an amazing Italian amatriciana.  So, here’s your list of ingredients:

  • Speck (Schweinsfleisch aus der CH)
  • Onions / Zwiebeln
  • Chopped Tomatoes
  • Tomato Sauce (Remind me to tell you about my recipe book!)
  • Fresh herbs / Frische kräutern

5 Easy Chef Luna Recipes

Thanks for your instagram love!

So, shortly after we opened, @dimdi_carnivora visited Jesus RICE! and shared some of her insights in perfect German on Instagram. Thank you!

All I know is she understood immediately Jesus RICE! is all about.

When we open on Monday, January 7, 2019, you’ll find that everything is still as described in her post.

Welcome to Jesus RICE!

It has been a great couple of weeks so far. New customers have come by to check out the lunchtime grab-n-go, and some known customers have swung by to say hi. Thank you for your support!

Not only have these first two weeks been about opening the doors, seeing who will stop by, and sales — but they have also been about aligning the operations. Some main areas of focus have been:

1) Establishing a menu and ensuring consistency in execution — and, more importantly, FLAVOR. My goal is that your dish is tasty and delicious every time!

2) Ensuring little to NO food waste every day. Believe it or not, this is a consideration that happens at the front end of the operational planning. I am hatching up some marketing ideas to make sure I never end a day with surplus.

3) Keeping the pricing crazy low. People ask me all the time whether I can make a living at these prices. Sure, I can — as long as I have the support from buying customers. 🙂 At the same time, I don’t cook because I have to, or because it’s my job — this is what I love doing. I love handling the challenges of food waste and maximizing flavor, delivering the most lunch at the lowest price that I can.

I get excited every day when I walk to the little restaurant at Schützenstrasse 10, Winterthur. I am loving the signs, the new decor, and it makes me happy to start a day not knowing who will walk through my door next!

Looking forward to meet you!
